About Dylan Race

Luthier, restorer, and dedicated member of Ithaca's music community

Dylan at the bench

Dylan Race has been making and restoring violins in Ithaca for over 20 years, establishing Race Orchestral Strings as a trusted resource for musicians throughout the Finger Lakes region.

His approach to lutherie emphasizes traditional craftsmanship, careful attention to each instrument's unique character, and a deep respect for the collaborative nature of the craft. Dylan learned his trade through apprenticeships with master luthiers and continues to learn from colleagues and community members.

Beyond building and restoring instruments, Dylan is committed to supporting Ithaca's vibrant music community. The shop serves as a gathering place for musicians, teachers, and fellow makers—a place where knowledge is shared, instruments are tried, and connections are made.

When he's not at the bench, Dylan can often be found collaborating with other local luthiers, attending concerts, or exploring the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes region that inspires his work.
